King Richard Review

Give Will the Oscar!

King Richard is one of 2021’s best films. The story of Richard Williams and his ‘plan’ to get prodigies, Venus & Serena Williams, out of Compton and into a life they deserve. It’s a story that sometimes stumbles into cliche territory, but recovers thanks to the performances.

Will Smith as Richard and Aunjanue Ellis as his wife, Oracene, anchors the film. Their performance of two parents wanting the best for their children sticks with the viewer. I wouldn’t be surprised if both get nominated for an Oscar, let alone win. The two actresses that play Venus and Serena, Saniyya Sidney and Demi Singleton respectively, are great in their own right.

The film is inspirational as well. The trials and tribulations the family goes through to leave a community that’s not for them will have you almost in tears, as it did with me. From the shady streets of Compton to the spotlight of the tennis courts. The film is an emotional journey.

Verdict

King Richard is one of 2021’s best films; featuring arguably a career-best performance from Will Smith and inspirational moments to boot.
